Important note: Unlocking characters using this method will not unlock them for World of Light mode. If you have already unlocked the next character in a group, by playing another mode for example, you will instead be challenged by the next available character in that group that hasn’t been unlocked. Once Sonic is unlocked, beating Classic Mode with Sonic or Mario (they’re in the same group) will prompt a challenge from Bayonetta, and so on.

For example, if you beat Classic Mode using Mario, you’ll be challenged by Sonic. When unlocking characters using Classic Mode, new characters will unlock in a specific order within groups. Similar to unlocking characters in previous versions of Smash, you can unlock characters simply by playing Classic Mode.
